À propos de l'artiste

David (Dudu) Gerstein est né en 1944 à Jérusalem de parents immigrés de Pologne. La famille a déménagé à Ramat Gan quand il avait quatre ans. Lui et son frère jumeau, Jonathan (Yoni) Gerstein, ont fait preuve de talent artistique dès leur plus jeune âge. Le professeur de David, Batya Uziel, l'a encouragé à étudier la peinture.

À l'âge de treize ans, il fut envoyé dans un camp d'art à Jérusalem, où il fréquenta plusieurs étés de suite. Au lycée, il suit des cours au Centre d'Art Beit Zvi à Ramat Gan avec Rina Balktovsky Arnon.

Au cours de son service militaire dans les parachutistes, il a été stationné à Ein Gev pendant un an, où il a peint une série d'huiles représentant des quais de pêche, des bateaux et des paysages de kibboutz. Là-bas, il rencontre l'artiste Aharon Giladi, qui l'encourage à poursuivre ses études artistiques.
