Über den Künstler

David (Dudu) Gerstein wurde 1944 in Jerusalem als Sohn aus Polen eingewanderter Eltern geboren. Als er vier Jahre alt war, zog die Familie nach Ramat Gan. Sowohl er als auch sein Zwillingsbruder Jonathan (Yoni) Gerstein zeigten schon in jungen Jahren künstlerisches Talent. Davids Lehrer, Batya Uziel, ermutigte ihn, Malerei zu studieren.

Im Alter von dreizehn Jahren wurde er in ein Kunstlager in Jerusalem geschickt, das er mehrere Sommer hintereinander besuchte. In der High School nahm er am Beit Zvi Art Center in Ramat Gan bei Rina Balktovsky Arnon teil.

Während seines Militärdienstes bei den Fallschirmjägern war er ein Jahr lang in Ein Gev stationiert, wo er eine Reihe von Ölbildern von Fischerdocks, Booten und Kibbuzlandschaften malte. Dort lernte er den Künstler Aharon Giladi kennen, der ihn ermutigte, sich der Kunst zu widmen.
